OVHS Speaker’s Series: Discovering the Gold Basin Meteorites: Unearthing Cosmic Treasures

September 24 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Bashaw's Gold Basin Sign Meteorite Dig

Twink Monrad and Jim Kriegh Examining Meteorites at Gold Basin, c. 1996-1998

Join us at the Oro Valley Public Library for a fascinating presentation by Twink Monrad, Lifetime Oro Valley Historical Society Supporter and Board Member, as she recounts her adventures with Jim Kriegh, the “Father of Oro Valley,” in the search for meteorites in the Gold Basin of Mohave County. This region, long known for its gold veins, revealed an astonishing treasure: previously undiscovered meteorites.

Twink will be joined by Dr. Larry Lebofsky, Senior Education and Communication Specialist with the Planetary Science Institute. Dr. Lebofsky brings a wealth of expertise, including roles with the Vatican Observatory Research Group and the Vatican Observatory Foundation.

Learn how this discovery sparked scientific interest from the University of Arizona, leading to classification and mapping efforts that continue to inform planetary science today.

Learn more about this adventure and the meteorite display at the Pusch House Museum.
