Just south of downtown Tucson, the San Xavier del Bac Mission rises from the desert like a luminous white landmark — a breathtaking stop on the Tohono O’odham Nation and one of Arizona’s most treasured historic sites.
Founded in 1692 by Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, this Baroque-style mission was completed in 1797, making it the oldest intact European structure in Arizona. Its sculpted façade, hand‑painted interior, and centuries of cultural history have earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966.
